Chameleon carriers
How to spot a chameleon carrier before you book, quote or fund it.
A chameleon carrier is a trucking company that shuts down and reopens under a new USDOT number, so its old safety record, out-of-service orders, claims or unpaid bills stay with the old number. The new company looks clean. The details it filed often do not change. FleetSniper checks every carrier’s address, phone, email and first listed officer against every other DOT number, active or inactive, and shows the matches side by side.

What a chameleon carrier is
Every motor carrier registers with FMCSA under a USDOT number, and its inspections, crashes, out-of-service orders and safety rating build up under that number. A chameleon carrier walks away from that history by closing the old registration and filing a new one, often under a new name, while the same people keep running the same trucks.
To a broker, an insurer or a lender looking only at the new number, the company looks like a new carrier with no record at all.
The signs that give one away
- The same physical or mailing address as a carrier that went inactive.
- The same office phone number or email address as another DOT number.
- The same company officer listed first on both registrations.
- A new authority grant soon after an older registration with the same details stopped operating.
How FleetSniper checks for chameleon carriers
Every carrier page has a Connections tab. It compares the carrier’s physical address, mailing address, phone number, email address and first listed representative with every other DOT number in the census, active or inactive. Where the Census Geocoder recognizes an address, carriers are compared on its standardized form, so one building written two ways still matches. Matching is exact, never a guess from a similar name.
The tab shows how many carriers match, with each connected carrier listed once and everything it shares. Each match shows the shared value on both sides, the other carrier’s registration status and its city and state, and links to its own page, safety record included.
A possible link is not proof
Shared details are evidence, not a verdict. Family businesses, shared office buildings, dispatch services and formation agents can put unrelated carriers at the same address or phone number. FleetSniper shows possible links with the evidence side by side, so you can judge them before you book the load, quote the policy or fund the invoice.
Who checks for chameleon carriers
- Freight brokers vetting a carrier before tendering a load.
- Insurance agents and underwriters checking whether a new applicant has a history under another number.
- Factoring companies and lenders checking who they are funding.
- Shippers and safety teams reviewing the carriers they use.
FAQ
What is a chameleon carrier?
A trucking company that shuts down and reopens under a new USDOT number, usually to leave behind a poor safety record, out-of-service orders, claims or debts that stay with the old number.
How do I check if a carrier is a chameleon carrier?
Compare the carrier’s address, phone, email and officers with other DOT numbers, especially inactive ones. FleetSniper does this on every carrier page and shows any matching carriers with the shared details side by side.
Does a shared address mean a carrier is a chameleon?
No. A shared detail is a possible link, not proof. Related businesses, shared offices and service companies can share an address or phone number. Read the evidence and the other carrier’s record before you decide.
Which details does FleetSniper compare?
